Understanding your NBN® connection type

The plans available to you depend on the NBN® technology at your address. Not sure what you have? Enter your address on our home page and we'll work it out for you.

Fibre to the Premises (FTTP)

The gold standard. Fibre optic cable runs all the way to your home, delivering the highest possible speeds. Typical in newer developments and many upgraded suburbs.

Best speeds available
Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC)

Fibre runs to a node in your street, then a coaxial cable (like old cable TV) connects to your home. Generally fast and reliable, and common in many metropolitan areas.

Great performance
Fibre to the Node (FTTN)

Fibre reaches a street cabinet (node), then existing copper phone lines cover the last stretch to your home. Speeds depend on how far you are from the node — the closer, the faster.

Speed varies by location
Fibre to the Building (FTTB)

Common in apartment buildings — fibre runs to the building's communications room, and the internal copper wiring takes it from there to your unit. Similar performance to FTTN.

Common in apartments
Fibre to the Curb (FTTC)

A newer upgrade to FTTN — fibre runs right to the pit outside your property, with just a short copper stretch into your home. Generally better speeds than FTTN or FTTB.

Better than FTTN
Fixed Wireless

For rural and regional areas outside the fibre footprint. A dish or antenna on your roof connects wirelessly to a nearby NBN® tower. Performance can vary based on weather and network congestion.
